Ed Hatton

FinTech Lead, Digital Jersey

How did your time at Millfield School shape your early career aspirations and interests in business and technology?

Millfield was great, albeit 22 years ago. In reality, my passion for financial services and industry was born very much in Jersey, working within a regulatory consulting firm my mother ran.

This platform provided me with a tremendous amount of insight into how regulated entities operate, the challenges and barriers faced by governance, risk and compliance and why laws and regulations are required. This naturally cascaded into a keen interest in technology, a fascination starting very early in life.

What motivated you to pursue a qualification in Construction Technology & Design and how has this background influenced your later roles in technology and business?

In all honesty, I didn't know where my life was going then, the course was interesting, but in reality, it was nothing more than a stepping stone to identifying where my life was heading. This period very quickly transitioned into a BTEC National Diploma in Business & Marketing Studies through our very own Highlands College.

How has your degree in Marketing from the University of Leeds been beneficial in your roles that require strategic foresight and communication skills, particularly in the fintech sector?

Leeds was an amazing chapter in my life. I forged long-lasting relationships, and some have excelled to become senior leaders in their sectors.

I would personally recommend University to anyone who desires the opportunity, explore what the UK has to offer, providing a wealth of life experiences that unfortunately Jersey struggles to provide to young people.

The degree was a great starting point, but just another stepping stone.

Learning how to teach a classroom of individuals of mixed abilities, control an audience and support others through their learning journey are all valuable skills that are very much transferable and supported me throughout my sales journey

Do you think that your certification in teaching English as a second language contributed to your skill set in mentoring and consulting roles?

Learning how to teach a classroom of individuals of mixed abilities, control an audience and support others through their learning journey, are all valuable skills that are very much transferable and supported me throughout my sales journey. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to build their confidence and public speaking skills.

What key marketing strategies did you develop at Sator Regulatory Consulting that significantly enhanced the company’s visibility and client engagement in offshore and emerging markets?

Great question. Jersey is and has always been in a very valuable position. We are a leading international finance centre of excellence, our regulatory framework and supporting laws place our jurisdiction in a position of influence and this has been acknowledged globally by investors, administrators, high-net-worths and most importantly, human capital who proudly relocate to embrace island life and contribute to our economy.

The marketing strategy was always simple, engage with influencers across the industry, support local and international associations, provide thought leadership and host exciting events.

A key area of growth was the emerging markets. Like many jurisdictions, they were missing a mature regulatory framework, this was where Sator excelled by providing valuable insight and regulatory support, from there we created strong brand equity and grew our business.

During your secondment at the JFSC, what innovative technologies or methodologies did you help integrate, and how did they bridge traditional and digital financial services?

My time on secondment was exciting. I had the pleasure of working with a great team, everything was entirely collaborative, and we delivered a range of roadmap and playbook activities, including the promotion of regulatory technology and the launch of the RegTech Tax Incentive Scheme.

The work was confidential, so keep an eye out for a press release soon, some very exciting industry-facing technology will be pushed out to regulated entities in the coming weeks.

Can you share an example of a mentee’s story that you found particularly rewarding during your time as mentor?

The Digital Jersey mentor program is a great opportunity for local entrepreneurs and individuals who are looking for additional context, insight and or support, when bringing a solution to market or taking a pivot in their current role.

I had the pleasure of working closely with two very intelligent individuals who run a digital agency specialising in blockchain and smart contract development, called ProcessLabs, a local firm excelling in an incredibly technical area of development.

Process Labs started a KYC platform called ForgeProof, which leveraged the smart contract technology. I provided some high-level support, introduced some partners and look forward to seeing their solution come to market in due course.

You are a member of the IoD Jersey Industry Sub-Committee. Why did you decide to get involved and what do you hope to achieve collectively on island?

The IoD is acknowledged globally as the pinnacle of leadership, with strong heritage in the City of London, globally reaching over 20,000 senior decision-makers, movers and shakers.

Joining the IoD is a privilege and something I am tremendously grateful to have joined so early in my career. I was fortunate enough to have joined the Industry Working Group, working with Chair, Alex Ruddy, where we challenged and championed some of the islands' more challenging issues. The working group has delivered numerous ministerial and stakeholder working groups, providing a platform to constructively challenge some common issues faced across industry.

In reality, change comes with time, the IoD are pushing a consistent message, influencing at all levels of our society, and laying the foundations for a brighter future for Jersey.
